IV Basics Competitive Advice 0 Speed / 0 Attack Tips Quick Role Planner

What are IVs?

  • IV stands for Individual Value.
  • Each stat has an IV from 0 to 31.
  • Higher IVs mean a better stat ceiling.
  • IVs are different from EVs and Natures.
In most cases, you want 31 IVs in the stats your Pokémon actually uses.

When perfect IVs matter

  • Attackers: want max offensive IVs and Speed.
  • Tanks: want bulk stats as high as possible.
  • Mixed attackers: often want almost everything high.
  • Trick Room users: often prefer very low Speed.

When lower IVs are better

  • 0 Speed IV helps under Trick Room.
  • 0 Attack IV reduces confusion self-damage and Foul Play damage for special attackers.
  • Some sets intentionally avoid unused offensive stats.
A “perfect” Pokémon is not always 6×31. It depends on the role.

IV vs EV vs Nature vs Hyper Training

  • IVs: natural hidden stat potential (0–31).
  • EVs: training points you invest into stats.
  • Nature: boosts one stat and lowers another.
  • Hyper Training: makes a stat behave like max IV in battle, but does not change breeding inheritance.

Breeding / optimization shortcuts

  • Use a Destiny Knot to pass down more IVs.
  • Use a Everstone to pass down the natures.
  • Use a Power Item to force one specific IV.
  • Use good parents first, then improve step by step.
  • For non-breeding builds, Hyper Training is usually the fastest finish.

  • Trick Room Attacker: 31 / 31 / 31 / x / 31 / 0

Judge wording reminder

  • Best = 31
  • Fantastic = 30
  • No Good = 0
  • Other labels mean the IV is somewhere in between.

Quick rule of thumb

  • Max the stats you use.
  • Drop unused Attack on special sets.
  • Drop Speed only for Trick Room or very specific strategies.
  • Bulk Pokémon still usually want high HP / Def / Sp. Def.
